Cassowary

Cassowary

Well, I did something. Not much, but it was something, I suppose. Took a hike down the “nature trail.” The guide was both bulky & sucky. I was sorry I bought it. I was tired or something, because I didn’t enjoy it all that much. I guess the Cassowary 5 minutes into it made the rest of the hike pale in comparison. I didn’t know the damn thing was a Cassowary at first. It was so loud. I thought some jackass was hiking off the trail. It was pissing me off because I hate when people leave a trail, plus I was trying to bird. The noise! So I finally turned around to see “who” it was. What I thought was a purple T-shirt turned out to be the thing’s head! It came right out of the bush & nearly crossed the trail. It was 20 feet away at the closest point. I snapped a quick photo, which turned out to be the the only one. It ended up turning around & going back into the forest. Very cool.

So after that I made the trek to Cow Bay & the beach. Along the way I stopped in the quick shop for a muesli slice. Oh, wonderful muesli slice. The fruits, nuts, oats & honey, covered with the occasional yogurt. Oh, how I shall miss you! I did make it to the beach after making sweet love to my muesli slice. Nice beach, a bit rocky, quite empty. The rainforest comes right down to the water in spots. I explored a bit of mangrove, exalted in pneumatophores and prop roots. Saw a bunch of these tadpole-looking things with forelimbs. When frightened they skip across the water to the opposite bank. Quite peculier.

And here I am, yet another beer in hand. Waiting on dinner to be served, and then there’s an orientation about the Snapper Is. trip at 7:30. After that I’ll probably get bored. I’m already bored. This was to be the highlight of my journey north, but I’m already looking ahead to Thursday. Maybe the area isn’t quite what I expected. This place is; I can’t get a decent shot of my cabin because all of those damned plants are in the way. Maybe I’m sick of being alone. Next time I’m definitely having my own wheels. Oh, the freedom. Maybe it’s the fact that when I go home, I’ll still be hours away from everyone, still like a tourist.

Hell, maybe I just need another stubby.

Maybe I’ve had enough beer already, right. Mr. Bank Card?

And money runs this damn resort. I understand the food being a bit pricey, but $8 for fruit tasting? And $18 for a 3 hour night walk? Come on.
